“We wanted to raise our kids in a better environment.” This is the dream that brought Mitsu Sato and his family to Kansas City more than 20 years ago, and started the Mitsu Sato hair dynasty. This was documented 20 years ago in the Star Magazine, an insert in the Kansas City Star Newspaper.
Sato’s decision to move his family from LA and the crime, cars, and smog was an easy one. He considered Arizona or Santa Fe, NM, but settled in Overland Park because of its amazing schools.
What did Sato give up to move to Kansas? He gave up a list of clients like, Sally Field, Carrie Fisher, and Gene
Hackman. However, in doing what was best for his children, it was only a matter of re-establishing himself as a stylist, which he did quickly at Sophia Salon on The Plaza. After working at Sophia Salon for four years, Sato opened Mitsu Sato Salon in Prairie Village, and 10 years later, he moved the salon to Overland Park and opened Mitsu Sato Hair Academy, so he could pass on his knowledge to the next generation of cosmetology professionals.
