FAFSA Steps

How to apply for federal aid

Your school uses your FAFSA data to determine your federal aid eligibility. Every prospective student is encouraged to complete the FAFSA — every situation is different.

  1. 01 Go to studentaid.gov to create an account and start your FAFSA for the upcoming school year.
  2. 02 Get your Federal and State tax returns.
  3. 03 If you are a dependent, you'll need your parents' or independent taxpayer's Federal and State tax returns.
  4. 04 Choose Mitsu Sato Hair Academy — school code 042053 — or search 'Mitsu' in the FAFSA school search.
  5. 05 Complete and sign your FAFSA.
  6. 06 Review your Aid Offer — it explains the types and amounts of aid offered, and your expected costs.

Dependency Status

Are you a dependent or independent student?

If you can answer yes to any of the following questions, you are not considered a dependent.

  1. 1. Are you 24 years of age or older?
  2. 2. Are you married?
  3. 3. Do you have children that receive more than half their support from you?
  4. 4. Do you support anyone other than your children?
  5. 5. Are you currently serving on active duty in the US Armed Forces?
  6. 6. Are you a veteran?
  7. 7. Are you an emancipated minor?
  8. 8. Are you in foster care or a ward of the court?
  9. 9. Are you homeless or at risk of being homeless?
Loans vs. Grants

Know the difference

Grants

A grant is like a gift from the government — you never have to pay it back. If you qualify for a Pell Grant, it is in your best interest to take it.

Loans

A loan is something you have to pay back. Federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans are guaranteed loans — meaning you're guaranteed to receive the amount stated, with the interest applied.

Title IV Eligibility

Federal aid requirements

  • Comply with the SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) Policy of Mitsu Sato Hair Academy — full policy in the school catalog.
  • Be enrolled at least half-time.
  • Certify you have not previously defaulted on a Title IV loan.
  • Cannot have exceeded annual or aggregate loan limits, and cannot have property subject to a judgment lien for a debt owed to the United States.
